The representative experience of lockdown, if ever you ventured into town, was to wonder “where is everybody?” One strange day in Fitzrovia I walked the streets alone. It was like stepping back centuries, before automated transport and modern commerce. A walk along the South Bank this weekend seemed like a return to modernity. It can hardly have been any busier in 1951 when the Festival of Britain introduced the new architectural glories of the site.
